Dr.
Matt Betterton
Matt Betterton resides in Vinton Iowa
with his wife Jodie and their three sons; John, Scott, and Mike.
After eight years of college Matt opened a chiropractic practice
in 2001, which has been thriving ever since.
Matt grew up hunting with German Shorthair
pointers but never had any formal education on professional dog
training. Matt met the Ries family in 2003 through Steve's sister,
Sarah, and a dog-training obsession was born.
After countless hours of watching,
learning, and questioning, Matt finally trained his first shorthair
which was purchased prior to meeting the Ries's. This dog was
gun shy, which was soon fixed, and then trained to be steady to
wing, shot, and fall. This dog was sold as a "started dog"
to a doctor in North Dakota who gives regular updates of hunting
performances. Matt now had room in his small kennel for his first
Top Gun German Shorthair Pointer.
Top Gun Gotta Have Faith was purchased
in the summer of 2004. Faith passed her first four A.K.C. Master
Hunt tests during the fall testing season of 2005. She finished
her last two legs of her Master Hunt title in the early spring
of 2006. Matt trained Faith from start to finish, including: force
fetch, steadiness to wing-shot-and-fall, honoring, and retrieving
on water. Matt has also force fetch trained two other shorthairs
for other clients.
Matt lives in the country and is minutes
from his favorite training grounds as well as ponds and lakes
for water work. Matt keeps all of his dogs in excellent shape
by "roading" them on his four-wheeler three times a
week. The dogs who stay at the Betterton's get to stay in a brand
new facility which has indoor-outdoor runs, heated floors, and
lots of daily attention. The dogs are also socialized with many
young children who give lots of attention. Matt is relatively
new to the sport of dog training but has quickly acquired all
of the tools and all of the confidence to properly train pointers
to the Master Hunt level.
